LOS ANGELES — Body-worn camera video shows the moment a sergeant with the LAPD was hit by a driver who was under the influence while investigating a separate call.

According to the department, police conducted a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle on Sept. 23. As Sgt. Vanessa Prentice was approaching the stolen vehicle, another driver drove up from behind and struck Prentice, KABC reports.

The body-worn camera video and surveillance video show Prentice hitting the hood of the vehicle before falling to the ground. Immediately after, another officer can be heard radioing, “Officer needs help, I have an officer down.”

“Our LAPD sergeant was in stable condition after nearly being killed,” the department said in a video news release.

After nearly a month of being in the hospital and multiple surgeries later, Prentice was released from the hospital to continue recovery at home.

Police said the driver who hit Prentice was arrested for felony DUI with injuries.
