On February 12th in Salt Lake City, Utah, a teenage gunman went on a rampage inside Trolley Square Mall, killing five people and critically wounding four. According to accounts, the first wave of emergency responders from the Salt Lake PD arrived within three minutes. The gunman was isolated and killed within four.
Derek Jensen of the Deseret Morning News describes the massive response mere moments after the initial dispatch call: “Trolley Square was surrounded by more than 200 police personnel, 100 firefighters, an host of medical experts and the state crime lab. Highway Patrol units kept the mall’s perimeter practically airtight. A Department of Public Safety helicopter spotlighted the mall and the surrounding neighborhood.”
Officer Ken Hammond, an off-duty Ogden (UT) PD officer who played a critical role in apprehending the gunman that night, told Police1 that the Salt Lake PD had recently done a “shooter in a mall” training simulation. In fact, several of the initial responders that night were the instructors.
