EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An Indiana police department released videos of a man who opened fire on officers in an ambush-style attack.
The Evansville Police Department released surveillance and body cam footage of the shootout Tuesday, Fox News reports. The department described the attack as an ambush on officers.
On Friday, Police responded to reports of gunfire when they encountered 51-year-old Barry Freeman, who was standing in a driveway with a rifle and fired at them.
Freeman fired “dozens” of rounds from an AR-15 and shotgun, striking four patrol vehicles, four houses and two businesses in the area, Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullum said. A neighbor, identified as 56-year-old Jeffrey Kempf, was fatally shot after Freeman mistook him for a law enforcement officer, Cullum said.
Kempf was shot after he went to check in on his neighbors to make sure they were safe during the shooting. Cullum added that Freeman didn’t target civilian vehicles passing by and only aimed at law enforcement officials.
Surveillance footage also shows Freeman taking cover behind a vehicle and heading into the driveway several times to shoot at responding officers.
The ramage ended after Det. Kyle Thiry shot Freeman twice in the chest from 63 yards away in a “dimly lit neighborhood,” Cullum said. Freeman was taken to a hospital, where he later died, according to CBS News. No officers were injured in the shooting.
“Officer Thiry is credited with ending Mr. Freeman’s rampage that night,” he said Tuesday. “That is a testament to the skill and the calmness that Officer Thiry displayed that night in bringing peace back to that neighborhood.”
The sergeant also said the motive behind Freeman’s rampage is unclear. Cullum also said Freeman didn’t have any prior criminal history and may have been intoxicated during the shooting.
“Somehow, we managed to get through this without any officers being injured,” Cullum said.
