(Beverly, MA) - Two Beverly cops were injured yesterday trying to stop a stolen car that led them on a 3-mile high-speed pursuit, police said.
The chase, during which the stolen car reached speeds of 70 mph downtown, began about 10:42 a.m., said Sgt. Michael Sungy.
The alleged thieves, Sally Palocci, 40, and Maurice Carr, 23, both of Marblehead, were outside a Cabot Street strip mall when “they saw a car running without anybody in it, so they jumped in and took off,” Sungy said.
Cruisers in pursuit tried to box in the hot 1992 Honda Accord on Brimbal Avenue. Officer Jeff Liacos stepped out of his cruiser, gun drawn, but Palocci, who police said was at the wheel, drove up on the sidewalk and struck him, Sungy said. “He had his gun out and the butt end of the gun broke the windshield as the car went by,” he said.
A second attempt at cutting the car off on Gateway Lane was successful, but only after Palocci allegedly slammed on the brakes and officer Clifford Woodfin “rear-ended her quite severely,” Sungy said.
Liacos was treated for back and neck injuries and Woodfin for a neck injury. Both were relieved of duty, he said. Palocci and Carr, who were each held last night on $ 15,000 cash bail, will be arraigned today in Salem District Court on charges including assault with intent to murder and larceny of a motor vehicle.
