Police continue to search for the suspect in the fatal shooting of a San Francisco Police officer in the Bayview District on Saturday, according to officials.
One officer died and another was injured when police went to talk to a person of suspicious nature and were shot, said Sgt. Neville Gittens.
The two plain-clothes police officers were in their car in the 1300 block of Palou Avenue when they called out to the person, who then turned around and began firing at the officers with what is believed to be an assault weapon.
The suspect then fled in an unknown direction.
Both officers were injured during the shooting and were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.
“The medical staff did as much as they could, but one officer expired,” said Sgt. Gittens. The other officer was treated and released.
Police recovered an assault rifle in the 1700 block of Palou Avenue.
They are still searching for the shooting suspect, described as a black man with cornrows in his hair wearing a dark jacket, possibly a peacoat. They are also looking for any witnesses.
Sgt. Gittens said a number for people to call with information will be staffed until the suspect is caught.
The police have not released the name of the officers.
The last time an officer was killed in the line of duty in San Francisco was 1994, Sgt. Gittens said.
