Roundtable Discussion Assessed Shooting

CHICAGO -- A roundtable discussion Friday determined an officer acted within departmental guidelines when he shot and wounded a man who officials said aimed an assault weapon-style handgun at police during an arrest.
The discussion on the shooting in the 7600 block of South Kingston Avenue concluded the officer felt his life was threatened by an armed offender, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden.
Officers responded to a 911 call of a man with a gun at the Kingston Avenue address at 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Camden said. He said they saw a man matching a description from the 911 call and asked him to drop his gun.
The offender had his back to police, but pointed the firearm toward the officers, Camden said.
When the two officers told him to drop the weapon, he did not, so one of the officers shot at him, he said. The officer fired twice as the man turned toward them with a gun, striking the man in the lower back, Camden added.
As of Friday morning, the man was in “stable” condition and was going to survive, Camden said.
The gun recovered was a Cobra M-11 semiautomatic handgun, Camden said. The 9 mm weapon had 22 rounds in the clip and one in the chamber, he said. The magazine can hold 30 rounds, he added.
The weapon, which is like a MAC-10 gun, had been in the man’s waistband, but when he started to run from the police he took it out and had it in his hand, Camden said.
The officer who fired the two shots joined the Police Department four years ago; one of the bullets struck the man in the lower back, Camden said.
