(JACKSON, Tenn.) -- A 37-year-old man is behind bars after he twice stole and crashed Jackson police cruisers while trying to escape arrest, authorities said.
Police spokesman Robert Graham said Carl Dear was arrested Monday and ordered held in the Jackson City Jail on charges including auto theft, house burglary and various traffic violations. No bond had been set.
The incident began when police officers attempted to stop a suspect matching the description of a man who had tried to break into a south Jackson home.
Graham said police officers chased the suspect into a wooded area only to have the man circle back and speed off in an officer’s patrol car.
The man wrecked the patrol car and ran.
Graham said police again thought they had cornered the man, only to have him steal a second patrol car.
After crashing the second police car and fleeing, the man forced his way into a house only to later surrender to police officers, Graham said.
