(MONROE, La.) -- A 19-year-old man drowned when he tried to get away from police by swimming across the Ouachita River, authorities said.
City police divers found Adner Johnson’s body Tuesday shortly after he went under about 25 feet from the bank, Chief Joe Stewart said.
The chase began when an officer tried to stop Johnson because his left headlight was out, a police report said.
After a short chase, Johnson, of Monroe, stopped the car, ran over the levee and jumped into the river. Two passengers got out but did not run, Stewart said.
Stewart said he did not know why Johnson ran. His body was sent to Shreveport for an autopsy. Stewart said he asked Louisiana State Police to investigate the incident.
