Associated Press

Tempe, Ariz. -- A routine freeway traffic stop in Tempe turned deadly.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety pulled over an SUV about 1:40 a.m. Thursday on the Loop 202 near McClintock Road for an expired license tag.

During questioning, the driver reportedly gave the officer false information, and the officer cuffed him and took him into custody.

It’s not clear what happened next, but the driver broke free and jumped over the side of the freeway, falling some 50 feet to his death.

A woman in the vehicle was taken into custody. DPS is investigating.
