WOOD-TV News (Grand Rapids, Mich.)
A Grand Rapids police officer is in serious condition after being shot. Police remain on the scene of the 1900 block Francis SE. The search continues for the two suspects.
It began with a home invasion on Francis. Police got the 911 call just before 10:45 Wednesday night. When they arrived, one officer saw one of two suspects leave the back of the house. Shots were exchanged, and the officer was struck three times. His body armor stopped one bullet; another struck him in the shoulder; and a third struck him in the leg.
Police are not releasing the officer’s identity. We do know he remains in serious but stable condition at an area hospital. Early Thursday morning, Police Chief Harry Dolan talked about the officer’s injuries.
“I’ve been to the hospital. I’ve talked with the doctors. We’re encouraged that the officer is struggling and working hard to recover. We’re encouraged by the fact that we’re being told that the officer is stable, but that doesn’t mean that we’re not still very worried and still very concerned and do ask for everyone’s prayers as we work through this evening,” Dolan said.
“Immediately following this incident, one of the suspects travelled on foot travelling east from Francis towards Jefferson. He was encountered by GRPD drugs and vice detectives who were working in the area and a second exchange of gunfire ensued. Numerous rounds were fired at that location as well,” Dolan said. None of the police officers were injured in that exchange.
Police say that suspect is a black male, 5'7", with a heavy build wearing a black puffy jacket. Police say he also had a limp. Police aren’t sure if he was shot, or if he had the limp beforehand.
The other suspect is described as a black male, 5'3" to 5'4". He had a blue scarf and a red puffy jacket.
