Neb. Town Getting Electric, Human Help to Spot Speeders

The Associated PRess

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - Speeders beware.

Those electronic signs telling drivers how fast they are going are not the only things monitoring speed on city roads.

Volunteers man the monitors and if a motorist is found to be exceeding the posted limit, the license number is jotted down and the driver of the car will receive a letter from police.

“It is not a ticket, but a letter informing the driver the speed limit has been exceeded,” Officer Dan Shea of the North Platte Police Department said.

The program is called “Volunteers in Policing.”

“All they have to do is fill out the application, and once they are qualified, they can call the police station, and let us know when, where and what time they are available,” Shea said. “And we will bring the monitor out and set it up.”
