(OMAHA) -- Leon M. Stallworth Sr., a retired Douglas County deputy sheriff, died Monday night of heart failure. He was 63.
After 26 years of service, Stallworth retired in 1992. During his time with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, he worked in the Douglas County Jail, corrections, patrol and court security. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 1.
Stallworth taught Sunday school at Pleasant Green Baptist Church, where he also was a choir member.
“He was very dedicated to the church,” said his son, Leon Stallworth Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. “He diligently studied the Bible.”
Stallworth Sr. coached football at the North Omaha Boys Club from 1971 to 1979.
“It started with my brother and myself,” his son said. “Then he continued to coach after we went to college.”
A single parent for more than 21 years, Stallworth Sr. served as a positive role model for his sons.
“He put both of us through college,” Leon Stallworth Jr. said. “He was a good mentor, a big-time community person. He was well-liked.”
Other survivors include a son, Jeffrey Stallworth of Lincoln; three sisters, Sylvia Hitchye and Nancy Ginger-Ivens of Tucson, and Julia Mudd of Houston; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Green Baptist Church, 2002 Willis Ave.
