NEW YORK (AP) -- A police officer shot and killed a man Thursday after the officer responded to an alleged domestic dispute on Staten Island.
The officer was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center, where he was being treated for knife and other wounds, police said.
The shooting occurred at about 8 a.m. after a woman called police to report a domestic dispute with a man who was skulking outside her apartment. While the officer was taking a report inside the home, the man burst in and attacked him with a knife, police said.
Amid a violent struggle, the officer fired one shot that struck the man in the chest, police said. The man was pronounced dead at Staten Island North Hospital.
The names of the man and the officer were not immediately released.
