MIAMI, Okla. (AP) -- Delaware County Sheriff Lenden Woodruff was held for a six-hour sobering-up period in the Miami County Jail and released Sunday after he was brought in on a driving under the influence charge.
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper stopped Woodruff on Oklahoma Highway 59 in Delaware County at 10:53 p.m. Saturday, according to Ottawa County Jail records.
The trooper said he pulled Woodruff over because he was traveling 35 mph in a 65 mph zone and because his 1995 Ford Crown Victoria twice swerved off the right side of the road and also crossed the center line. Woodruff was alone in the vehicle when it was pulled over.
After the stop, Woodruff was uncooperative and tried to prevent the trooper from handcuffing him, according to the trooper. A .45-caliber Ruger Red Hawk revolver and a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver were taken from Woodruff during the arrest, according to jail records.
Woodruff was brought to the Ottawa County Jail because the Mayes County Jail was over capacity.
Woodruff refused a breath-alcohol test shortly after being arrested, according to a police affidavit.
Ottawa County Sheriff Dennis King ordered Woodruff held for a six-hour sobering-up period as required by state law. Woodruff was released Sunday morning after posting $1,000 bond. He said nothing when he was picked up around 7:30 a.m. Sunday by Undersheriff Rick White.
Police charged Woodruff with driving under the influence, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, traveling with an open container of beer and resisting arrest.
