CHICAGO — Four people trying to rob a bank Tuesday morning shot a security guard and two other people before fleeing, authorities said.
The suspects managed to disarm the guard at Illinois Service Federal Savings and Loan around 9 a.m., said police spokeswoman Monique Bond.
She said the guard was shot in the chest and a teller was shot in the back during the attempted robbery. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado confirmed that three people were taken to hospitals but he had no information about their conditions.
Police were searching for the four suspects, who witnesses said had fled in a maroon vehicle, Bond said. FBI agents were also on the scene, and two nearby elementary schools were locked down as a precaution.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the suspects got away with any money.
A recorded message left on the bank’s main telephone number Tuesday morning instructed callers to try back later. A message left for comment at one of the bank’s other branches was not immediately returned.
