TORONTO — A Toronto police officer is in stable condition in hospital after being stabbed in the neck during an altercation that began during a routine traffic stop.

Insp. Peter Callaghan says shots were fired before the officer was wounded in the incident late Sunday in the city’s north end (in the Bathurst-Wilson area).

“As a result of some interaction with a member of the public, there was an exchange of gunfire with an individual,” said Callaghan.

“As a result of that, a member of the public has been injured.”

Both the officer, who’s in his 30s, and the civilian were rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital.

Chief Bill Blair was briefed on the officer’s condition at the hospital.

“It’s a serious wound, but he’s stable and I’m confident he will be fine,” he said.

Blair said the investigation has been turned over to the Special Investigations Unit and he would no longer comment on what took place.
