ARLINGTON, Texas — An Arlington police officer apparently killed himself Tuesday afternoon on Park Run Drive, a police spokeswoman said.

Police were summoned about 3:30 p.m. after getting a 911 call about a possibly suicidal person “believed to be an officer,” said Tiara Ellis Richard, a police spokeswoman.

The police department’s SWAT team was dispatched “out of an abundance of caution,” Richard said. When officers arrived, they found the off-duty officer in civilian clothes, dead from an apparent gunshot, Richard said.

A gun was found near the body, Richard said. She did not know if it was his service weapon.

The neighborhood is near the 2400 block of Park Run Drive close to the intersection with Vista Creek Court. The area borders Rush Creek Linear Park in west Arlington.

The officer lived in the neighborhood but the body was not outside his own home, Richard said.

The officer’s name was not released early Tuesday evening because next of kin had not been notified.

Investigators were still working at the scene at 6:30 p.m.
