ATLANTA — A veteran fire captain and fire department employee are being punished for falsely accusing a Stone Mountain officer of misconduct, FOX 5 reported.
DeKalb County Fire and Rescue Capt. Terrell Davis and employee Krystal Cathcart claimed Sergeant Stephen Floyd created a sense of fear and cussed them out during a traffic stop. When that turned out to be false, Fire Chief Darnell Fullum was not pleased, he told the publication.
“I had the same feelings and thoughts as everybody, and that was shock and surprise,” he said to FOX 5.
The two fire employees changed their story and recanted the error of Sgt. Floyd using profanity when the police department showed body cam video of the incident to Cathcart.
The fire department launched an internal investigation and concluded there was an obvious issue of truthfulness. The department accepted Cathcart’s resignation in lieu of termination. Davis was fired.
Davis’ attorney, Musa Ghanayem, said he will appeal the department’s decision.
“Both regret the statements with regard to what was maybe exaggerated but they both felt threatened, they both felt there was a sense of fear,” Ghanayem told the news site.
Fullum said he will be handing the results over to the county’s district attorney to determine whether any laws were broken.
