OAKLAND — A suspected assailant was killed and a female police officer was hospitalized Thursday morning after an officer-involved shooting in the Adams Point neighborhood, police said.

The incident occurred at 8:37 a.m. in the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Van Buren Avenue, next to an offramp of eastbound Interstate 580.

The officer responded to reports of an assault in the 200 block of MacArthur Boulevard, where she was confronted by a man who began beating her in the head and face with a metal object, police said.

During the fight, the officer pulled out her gun and shot the man, authorities said.

The alleged attacker, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer suffered injuries and was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where she is being treated for head trauma, authorities said.

It was Oakland’s sixth officer-involved shooting this year, four of which have been fatal.

The fatal shooting is under investigation by Oakland police’s homicide and Internal Affairs units, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s office.

The California Highway Patrol closed the offramp and all lanes at the shooting scene.
