DOTHAN, Ala.- Police are unsure what motivated a man to shoot himself to death at a downtown site near the Dothan Police Department.
Police responded to a report of a man with a firearm near Adams Street and St. Andrews Street just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when they encountered Michael G. Whitaker, 40. Whitaker reportedly had a pistol and a knife in his hand as police approached.
“There was no altercation and apparently no words exchanged,” Deputy Coroner Ben Earnest said. “He held the gun up to his head and that was about it.”
Earnest pronounced Whitaker dead at about 2:30 a.m. at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
