A St. Louis County police officer on patrol late Monday night turned onto a side street and, in full view of his headlights, saw a quarrel turn into a homicide, officials said.
The officer quickly captured the suspect, who surrendered his weapon and offered no resistance, said Officer Tracy Panus, a department spokeswoman.
Panus said the officer was driving on Chambers Road shortly after 11 p.m. when he turned north onto Earl Drive, in the Castle Point neighborhood of North County. The officer, whose name was not released, observed two men quarreling in the street, near the intersection with Chambers.
“He flipped on his high beams, and one man pulled a gun and shot the other,” Panus said. “He jumped from his car and ordered the gunman to surrender.”
Ashley F. Jamerson Jr., 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived in the 10000 block of Earl, where he was killed.
The officer arrested Patrick Tobias, 38, of the 4500 block of Parker Road in Black Jack. Tobias was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
No motive was disclosed.
