Rankin Police Chief Darryll Briston is facing federal charges in connection with a public corruption probe.
According to a statement from US Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh has indicted Briston on charges of “deprivation of civil rights under color of law and theft from an organization receiving federal funds.”
The indictment alleges that Chief Briston seized nearly $6,000 from a suspect’s safe during an April 2002 arrest in conjunction with the ATF, then later stole the money, violating the sustpect’s rights “by denying the resident due process to obtain the return of the funds.”
Shortly after his arrest this morning, Briston was taken to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Braddock complaining of chest pains.
UMPC would not comment on his condition. Federal authorities would only confirm that Briston is in federal custody.
