LITTLE ELM, Texas (AP) -- The girlfriend of a slain Little Elm Police officer was found early Saturday in a Gainesville hotel in what police are calling an apparent long-distance murder-suicide attempt.
Denise Elverious Miller, 38, was discovered about 5 a.m. in a Ramada Inn hotel room with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said. Police said she was in intensive care at Parkland Memorial Hospital, but hospital officials could not confirm her status early Saturday.
Ms. Miller has been charged in the murder of her boyfriend, Little Elm Police Officer Jonathon Wayne Irby, whose body was found Friday afternoon in a rental home in the 400 block of Willow Lake north of FM 720.
Police said the small caliber gun she used was the same type used to kill Officer Irby. A long letter written by Ms. Miller was also found in the hotel room explaining Ms. Miller’s actions, police said. Details of that letter were not immediately released.
Authorities confirmed that Ms. Miller and Officer Irby had recently broken up and they hope to be able to speak with her as soon as possible about the shootings.
