According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the incident occurred on April 24 but was not known to city officials until the news outlet published the video Tuesday.
The Salt Lake County district attorney’s office is also reviewing the case, the agency told reporters.
Police were called to the scene after the suspect, 36-year-old Jeffery Ryans, was heard yelling at his wife and someone called 911. Police tried to arrest Ryans because he wasn’t legally allowed to be at the home.
Ryans suffered nerve and tendon damage from the attack. He’s undergone multiple surgeries and it’s possible he may need to have his leg amputated, according to the Tribune.
