PROVIDENCE, R.I.- More immigrants are accusing police of harassment. This time, the charges are being made against state police.
A group of illegal immigrants from Guatemala says state troopers failed to read them their rights before requiring them to sign documents agreeing to deportation hearings.
The immigrants say they also were threatened with death if they tried to escape during a July 11th traffic stop in Richmond.
State police Major Steven O’Donnell says no one has filed a complaint alleging mistreatment in regard to the traffic stop. The immigrants made their allegations during a news conference yesterday in Providence.
Immigrants living in Newport said last month that police there harassed them with warrantless searches and threats.
