MADISON COUNTY, Mo. — An Alton man was charged Tuesday with attempting to disarm a police officer and aggravated battery for an incident that happened in Godfrey on Monday.

Jason D. Alton, 24, of the 3200 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, was charged. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said that on Monday afternoon, a deputy went to a home in the 1200 block of Enos Lane for a trespassing complaint. Alton’s brother had called police, saying Alton was at his parent’s home and had been warned not to be there.

The responding deputy attempted to question Alton as he was leaving the home, and Alton told the deputy to stay away from him and shoved the deputy. The deputy grabbed Alton, and the two fell to the ground in a struggle. Alton tried to hit the deputy in the face and attempted to pull the deputy’s handgun out of its holster. The deputy was able to keep the gun away and pinned Alton to the ground, a second deputy who arrived helped to handcuff Alton.

The deputy was not seriously hurt but did sustain minor scratches to his face.

Alton was taken to the Madison County Jail. His bail was set at $75,000.
