PORTLAND, Maine — A 29-year-old Portland man will be sentenced next month for assaulting two Portland police officers and two other people last year.
Ibrahim Muhammed was convicted Tuesday of aggravated assault, two counts of assault on a police officer, and two counts of assault in connection with a Feb. 17, 2005, attack, authorities said. Justice Thomas Warren issued the verdict after a jury-waived trial at Cumberland County Superior Court.
Officers Brian Regan and Stephen Black were trying to question Muhammed about two fights in the Old Port when he attacked them, police said. Muhammed punched Black repeatedly and choked Regan.
Regan was treated for a broken nose, a broken hand, a bite on his ear, a back injury and damage to his windpipe from being choked, police said. Both officers are still recovering from their injuries.
Muhammed has had a series of assault convictions and arrests. Originally from Bronx, N.Y., he changed his name from Charles Priester in 2000.
He could face more than 20 years in prison for the felonies of assaulting an officer and aggravated assault.
