Duty Death: Melissa Powers - [Monroe County]

KEY LARGO, Fla. — Deputy Melissa Powers died in a single vehicle automobile accident at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She was driving north on U.S. 1 with her flashing emergency lights and sirens on.
She was en route to locate another deputy who could not be reached by dispatchers when the crash occurred. She was transported to a local hospital where she died a short time later. It is believed that the deputy she was attempting to locate had switched his radio to another frequency, making him temporarily unreachable.
Deputy Powers had served with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for almost four years. She is survived by her son and daughter.
