CHESTER, Pa. — An officer has died from complications related to an injury sustained while on duty.
Chester Patrolman Avery Freeman, 49, responded in March with another officer to the scene of a domestic disturbance, where a woman was arrested.
Freeman slipped on wet bricks while walking back to his patrol car and fell, injuring both knees to the point of requiring surgery, The Officer Down Memorial Page reported.
While he recovered from the operation at the Taylor Rehabilitation Center, he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism and died April 30. He was laid to rest Monday with full police honors as family and friends looked on.
Freeman had been recognized for exceptional service and lifesaving during his nearly 15 years with the department, according to NBC Philadelphia.
