The officer, identified as Sgt. Billy Randolph, was hit while responding to an initial crash involving a tractor-trailer that had struck a barrier and caught fire, according to the report. He was standing outside his vehicle during the cleanup when a vehicle drove through the accident scene and hit him. Randolph was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A Fort Worth police officer has died after being struck at the scene of a crash, WFAA reported.

The officer, identified as Sgt. Billy Randolph, was hit while responding to an initial crash involving a tractor-trailer that had struck a barrier and caught fire, according to the report. He was standing outside his vehicle during the cleanup when a vehicle drove through the accident scene and hit him. Randolph was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Randolph served with the Fort Worth Police Department for 29 years, according to the report.

“The Fort Worth Police Department asks everyone to keep the family and friends of Sgt. Randolph in their prayers, along with our Fort Worth PD family,” the department said in a statement.

A procession from the hospital to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office was scheduled for 11 a.m., according to the report
