NORFOLK, Va. — Detective Maurice “Mo” Joseph, a 26-year veteran of the Norfolk Police Department, has died from cancer linked to his volunteer work at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 attacks, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Joseph was one of 40 Norfolk officers who traveled to New York City, using personal vacation time and unpaid leave, to assist in the search and recovery efforts, according to the page. His illness developed as a result of his exposure to hazardous conditions during that mission.
Joseph is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter and several grandchildren.
