NEW YORK — Five NYPD cops have self-isolated after recent vacations to nations with large coronavirus outbreaks, according to Mayor de Blasio and police sources.
“There are five,” de Blasio confirmed during a press briefing. “We’re going to make sure they get tested and we’re going to coordinate with [the NYPD] on that.”
The Finest are all asymptomatic, but setting themselves aside out of an abundance of caution, according to sources.
They recently traveled abroad to countries facing particularly fierce cases of the coronavirus, sources said. At least one of the afflicted cops traveled to China, where the contagion roared to life in late 2019, sources said.
It wasn’t immediately clear where the other officers went.
The NYPD on Tuesday night sent out a two-page memo in part advising cops on protocol to follow when dealing with confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases.
Police are instructed to not enter the location of such cases — or to wear gloves and masks if they must. They’re also told to refrain from traveling in ambulances with potential patients or transporting relatives.
New York had 11 confirmed cases of the deadly disease late Wednesday — including a Westchester lawyer with a Midtown office, some of his family members, a friend, and members of the friend’s family, the New York Post reports.
