Man with suspended license hits cop while texting

Police say the officer, who was speaking to the driver of a vehicle at the time, sustained non-life-threatening injuries

MANASSAS, Va. — Manassas City Police have charged a Herndon man for hitting a police officer with his car on Saturday morning. They say the driver was texting while driving and also was driving on a suspended license before striking the officer, who was conducting a traffic stop on Route 28 near Phoenix Drive.

According to police, witnesses told them that at approximately 9:00 a.m. Saturday the officer was speaking to the driver of a stopped vehicle on the 8700 block of Centreville Road when a black Ford swerved off the road and struck both the officer and the stopped vehicle. Police tell us the driver of the Ford came to a stop on Phoenix Drive, where other officers caught up with him.

Police say the officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver has been identified as 25-year-old Alexander M. Bacon of Herndon, Va. Police say he was charged with Texting While Driving, Reckless Driving, Driving on a Suspended Operator’s License (3rd Offense), and Failure to Proceed with Caution or Yield to Right of Way by Lane Change Lane to Stationary Vehicle Displaying Flashing Blue, Red, or Amber Lights.

Bacon was held on a $5,000 secured bond, say police. He has a pending court date of September 9.
