HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. — A suspect has been charged after video captured him shooting fireworks at police officers.
Authorities said Tuesday that 36-year-old Jose Alberto Martinez was charged after allegedly shooting the fireworks at Huntington Park police while celebrating Mexico’s June 17 World Cup win over Germany, KTLA reported.
The video shows two men lighting up fireworks before one of them, believed to be Martinez, shoots a “highly explosive mortar-style” firework at police, according to KABC.
Officers are seen on video jumping out of the way as the firework creates an explosion on the ground a few feet away from them. Police said the man also shot another mortar-style firework at a police helicopter.
Martinez faces several charges, including four felony counts of assault on a peace officer and one count of using a destructive device and explosive to injure/destroy. He faces up to 27 years in prison if convicted.
