MORENCI, Ariz. — Two Arizona law enforcement officers were recovering Tuesday after being wounded in a shootout that killed a domestic violence suspect in a small mining town near the New Mexico border, authorities said.
The suspect — 29-year-old Chris Ingram — died at a hospital in Morenci, authorities said.
Greenlee County Deputy Jon Mennen and Clifton police Sgt. Jason Mingura suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were being treated at University Medical Center in Tucson.
The officers encountered the suspect on Monday night while they were on the way to the scene of a domestic violence report, Undersheriff Patrick Sexton said. Shots were fired after the officers stopped Ingram on U.S. Highway 191.
Further details were not immediately available.
Mennen and Mingura each sustained two gunshot wounds, but it was unclear where they were shot. The Arizona Department of Public Safety was investigating.
Sexton said both men were in good spirits and recovering.
“They will go home. Maybe not tonight, but they are going home,” Sexton said.
Mingura is a four-year veteran of the Clifton Police Department, while Mennen has been with the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office for eight months.
