JERSEY CITY — Three Jersey City police officers were taken to a local hospital with injuries after a scuffle with an armed man on Rutgers Avenue Thursday morning, Jersey City police said.

The officers had responded to a report of drug activity in the area of Rutgers and McAdoo avenues at 11:15 a.m. and during their investigation a man pulled out a gun and fired it, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. Wallace-Scalcione did not say if the police officers returned fire.

The man, 32-year-old Jamel Bolden, was arrested after a brief struggle that left the officers with minor injuries. Bolden is expected to be charged with resisting arrest and other charges, Wallace-Scalcione said.

A witness, Eric, who did not give his last name, said it seemed like 25 police cars arrived at the scene while the three police officers were trying to place Bolden under control.

According to a police radio transmission, one police officer was fired upon in the area of Rutgers and McAdoo Avenue.

The incident comes three days and the South District police station was struck by gunfire and five days after a shooting incident in the area that left four people with gunshot wounds.
