MARICOPA, Ariz. — Police officers responding to a 911 hang-up call shot and killed a 32-year-old military veteran who suffered from PTSD, saying that they believed he was armed.

Police responded Sunday around 2:20 p.m. to a home in Cobblestone Farms subdivision, when they encountered Johnathan Guillory. After a confrontation, both officers opened fire, according to AZFamily.com.

Guillory was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ricardo Alvarado said officers believed the man was carrying a weapon of some sort, but did not provide any additional details.

Guillory’s widow said he struggled for years with post-traumatic stress brought on by a combat deployment in Iraq and time as a contract worker in Afghanistan.

She said that he had just been turned away at the VA Hospital, where he went to report a mental health emergency, because they were full.

The incident is being investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
