MONTEREY PARK, Calif.- Deputies chased and shot more than 90 rounds at a sport utility vehicle that they believed had been involved in a shooting Monday, police said.
The driver, Winston Hayes, 44, and a sheriff’s deputy were wounded, police said.
The 15-minute chase began after police responded to a call about shots being fired in a Compton neighborhood plagued by a rise in gang-related shootings. They tried to pull over an SUV that had been reported loitering in the neighborhood, but the car fled.
It stopped after spikes flattened its tires. Videotape shows ten deputies surrounding the SUV, then firing a barrage of gunfire at the vehicle after it lurched forward and hit a squad car, police said.
Hayes, believed to be under the influence of drugs, was shot four times, said Sheriff Lee Baca. He was hospitalized with wounds that were not life threatening.
A bullet that may have been fired by another officer struck an unidentified deputy’s bulletproof vest, Baca said. He was treated at a hospital for his bruise and released.
No weapon was found in Hayes’ vehicle.
