EAST PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Hundreds gathered in Pittsburgh to protest the fatal officer-involved shooting of a fleeing teen that was partly captured on video.

On Wednesday evening, hundreds converged to protest the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Antwon Rose, who was fatally shot by police on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Investigators said police stopped a vehicle Tuesday in East Pittsburgh that matched the description of a vehicle being sought in a nonfatal shooting, according to the Associated Press. An East Pittsburgh officer was taking the driver into custody when the two passengers, including Rose, fled from the scene.

A bystander filmed the confrontation, which shows the teens fleeing from the car. After three shots ring out, the teens are seen falling to the ground.

Allegheny County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough said Rose was shot three times, and a medical examiner report said Rose died at a local hospital. The report didn’t say where Rose was struck or the cause of death.

McDonough said no shots were fired at the officer and no weapon was found on Rose’s body. Police did find two semi-automatic handguns on the floor of the car.

Pennsylvania law permits officers to use lethal force on fleeing suspects, McDonough said. It’s allowed to prevent death or serious injury to an officer or another person. It’s also permitted if the fleeing suspect has used or threatened violence or possesses a lethal weapon.

City officials said the officer, who hasn’t been identified, was sworn in just hours before the fatal shooting but had been with the department for two weeks and has eight years of LE experience. He has been placed on administrative leave, per policy, while an independent investigation is being conducted.

The driver who was taken into custody was released after officers didn’t feel they had cause to charge him in the initial non-fatal shooting.McDonough said police were confident that the car they pulled over was involved in the earlier incident, noting that a back window had been shot out.

He also said it’s too early in the investigation to say whether Rose fired a weapon in the earlier shooting.
