SAN JOSE, Calif. — The suicidal man found dead after he shot and killed a veteran San Jose police officer was killed by police gunfire, authorities said Thursday.
Scott Dunham, 57, allegedly stood from his balcony at 2664 Senter Road and shot and killed Officer Michael Johnson shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Officer Doug Potwora, a 16-year veteran, returned fire and killed Dunham, police said.
But Dunham’s condition wasn’t known until early Wednesday, when police used a robot and confirmed that he was killed. There had also been questions as to whether Dunham had shot himself.
Police had been summoned to Dunham’s apartment after he allegedly held a gun to his wife and threatened suicide, police said.
The shooting was the first killing of a San Jose officer in 13 years.
Funeral arrangements for Johnson are pending.
