COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says one of his deputies shot and wounded a suspect that had been chased this morning.
Lott says deputies tried to stop a motorcycle about 3:30 this morning for an improperly displayed license plate in northeast Columbia. The sheriff says the motorcyclist ran on Interstates 20 and 77. Lott says the motorcycle wrecked on an off-ramp.
The sheriff says a deputy fired when the man pulled a silver object from his pocket.
Lott says 27-year-old Jason Clark of Columbia was taken to Palmetto Health Richland hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the elbow.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck and the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
