PAMPA, Texas — A Texas police officer shot in the face during a standoff Tuesday is recovering after undergoing jaw reconstruction surgery.
Everything Lubbock reports Sgt. Houston Gass was shot when the officer responded to a domestic disturbance.
29-year-old Ryan John Kelley, who has multiple prior felonies, was taken into custody by officers after a nearly five-hour standoff. The suspect was shot in the leg as officers entered the home and he refused to drop an object in his hand after repeated commands by police, according to the Amarillo Globe News.
Kelley’s girlfriend and young children, who were inside the residence, were escorted out unharmed.
Kelley was transported to a hospital and was undergoing treatment.
A social media campaign was started for Sgt. Gass following the shooting. ‘Lights On for Sergeant Houston Gass’ – a campaign to keep a light on in solidary with the officer as he recovers – has garnered 10K participants as of this posting.
