OGDEN, Utah — One police officer was shot and another man was killed during a chaotic police shootout Tuesday afternoon near Ogden-Weber Technical College in Utah.

The officer was receiving medical treatment and was in stable condition as of Tuesday evening, said Ogden Deputy Chief Jake Sube.

The attack occurred after police were responding to a protective order violation, according to NBC affiliate KSL of Salt Lake City.

Sube said that an officer arrived at the scene and encountered a man with a gun. It’s unclear what led to gunfire being exchanged, but additional officers were quickly called to the area.

The situation was described as “highly chaotic and rapidly evolving,” which Sube said led to additional rounds being fired by both the responding officers and the suspect.

Numerous shots can be heard in civilian video taken of the event that was shard by KUTV2news on its Twitter channel.

Classes at the technical college had not been in session when the shooting took place, according to college President Jim Taggart, who added that he was not aware of any students injured during the event.

Sube said that the Weber-Morgan Critical Incident Task Force will launch a formal investigation into the shooting.

“We are committed to ensuring [a] comprehensive, unbiased and transparent investigation,” he continued.

“We understand that incidents like these can be unsettling for our community ... We will provide updates as new information is available,” Sube added.
