SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was killed and a police officer is expected to recover after being shot in Salt Lake City early Monday morning.
It happened at an apartment building near 100 S 300 E shortly before 4 a.m.
Police discovered a deceased woman there, and an officer and the suspect then exchanged gunfire. Both were hospitalized.
SLCPD spokesman Greg Wilking said the officer suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound in a lower extremity.
Unified Police will investigate the woman’s death and the officer-involved shooting, per protocol.
Police have not released the identities of any of the people involved.
Some people living in nearby apartments were evacuated.
Police are keeping 300 E between 100 S and 300 S closed as they investigate the incident. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
“If you do need to get into that area for business, officers can escort, but we’d rather people just stay away from the area at this time,” Wilking said.
