LOS ANGELES – Police have released video capturing the August ambush attack on two officers that led to a fatal shooting.
Two Los Angeles Police Department officers fatally shot a known gang member after he shot at them in the middle of a crosswalk.
Recently-released security and body camera footage of the Aug. 18 incident shows Roberto Rene Gabriel firing a single round into the driver’s door of a marked police vehicle stopped at a stoplight. According to an LAPD video release, he then fled on foot down a nearby alley and the officers made a U-turn and radioed for backup while attempting to cut Gabriel off at the end of the alley.
Body camera footage shows Gabriel and two officers exchanging fire before Gabriel was intercepted by backup officers. The LAPD said in a release that Gabriel was treated for “a yet undetermined number of gunshot wounds” but later died as a result.
According to the LAPD, Gabriel had previously been convicted of offenses such as carrying a concealed weapon, robbery and evading a police officer. He was also a known member of a Los Angeles-based street gang, according to police.
