DALLAS — A suspect killed in an aggravated robbery Friday afternoon has been identified as 29-year-old Christopher Michael Dew, authorities said.

Police released the name of the suspect Saturday.

Officers arrived around 1 p.m. Friday at Cash Store, in the 4100 block of west Texas 183, after receiving an alarm call, police said in a news release.

Dew, armed with a handgun, exited the building while taking a woman hostage. He was confronted by the officers as he was forcing the hostage inside a vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

Two officers opened fire, killing the suspect. The hostage, an employee of Cash Store, was not harmed.

The armed robbery is the latest in more than a dozen similar crimes targeting Cash Stores in the North Texas area since December, Star-Telegram media partner WFAA reported. James McLellan, public information officer for the Irving police, said there was no information as to whether Dew was linked to any of the previous crimes.

Irving Mayor, Beth Van Duyne, wrote a statement on her Facebook page commending the officers: “The Irving Police Department is committed to the safety and security of our residents and that was clearly demonstrated today by the actions of these police officers.”

The officers are on leave, “not only to make sure their actions were lawful and within policy but also to give then time to recuperate and be fit to return to duty,” McLellan said.
