An Everett police officer investigating a car prowl shot and wounded a driver as the fleeing man drove a car straight toward the officer Monday morning, police said.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office reported that the driver, 21, was shot in the leg and taken to Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus for treatment.

His injury was not life threatening. A boy and a girl, both 17, who were in the car, were arrested.

The sheriff’s statement said the Everett officer responded to a report of a car prowl in progress in the 2500 block of East Grand Avenue at about 5 a.m. He saw two males jump into a Honda with a female already inside. The vehicle was headed straight at the officer when he fired at the driver.

Investigators said the Honda had been stolen in Everett earlier Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office said the two teenagers in the car were booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett for investigation of first-degree theft, and the girl also on an outstanding warrant for possession of stolen property unrelated to the Monday incident.

The officer, whose name was not released, was reported to be in his 30s, has been with the department for approximately a year and has previous law enforcement experience with another agency. He was placed on paid administrative leave.

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team is investigating the shooting.
