COLUMBIA, S.C. — Federal authorities are reviewing the case of a black South Carolina couple who say they were subjected to an illegal cavity search.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the inquiry says Thursday the FBI is among several agencies reviewing the case of Lakeya Hicks and Elijah Pontoon.

The official spoke with The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly on the case. He says the FBI reviews all potential civil rights allegations and could ultimately launch an official investigation.

Hicks was driving a new car with paper tags when Aiken police pulled her over in 2014. Her husband says police searched his anal cavity on the side of the road.

No drugs were found. The city says its officers did nothing illegal.
