CHICAGO — On Sunday, five men were charged in attacks Saturday that left three police officers injured, including a correctional officer.
Charles Rush, 23, is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm in a shooting that left an off-duty Cook County correctional officer hospitalized with a bullet in his stomach, Assistant State’s Attorney Gerardo Tristan said.
Rush was arguing with his pregnant girlfriend over a cell phone about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the South Side Gresham neighborhood when the off-duty officer walked up, authorities said.
The officer showed his badge and Rush walked off the porch saying, “I’ve got something for the police,” before returning shirtless with a gun, Tristan said.
Rush was denied bond Sunday.
About two hours later in the Pilsen neighborhood, an off-duty Chicago Police officer was attacked by three reputed gang members, police said.
One man struck the officer with his fists while two others came at him with a manhole sewer cover, Tristan said. Jonathan Torres, 19, Lucio Tapia, 20, and Jose Casarrubias, 27, were ordered held on $750,000 bail Sunday.
Saturday afternoon, an officer was slashed in the face while responding to a domestic disturbance on the South Side.
James Harrison, 18, is charged with aggravated battery and domestic battery, Tristan said. He was held on $1 million bail Sunday.
