SAN FRANCISCO — An attacker stabbed a California Highway Patrol officer multiple times Tuesday in San Francisco and was caught at a bank just over a mile from the city’s Super Bowl festivities.

CHP Chief Ernie Sanchez and an agency spokesman say the officer was stabbed in the neck and arm but was expected to survive, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The officer, who has not been identified, was attacked near an on-ramp to the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge and then taken to a hospital, San Francisco police say. It was not immediately clear what led to the stabbing.

A suspect, whose identity was not released, was arrested at a bank a few blocks from the attack, police say.

Emily Seip said she heard sirens wailing for about half an hour before hearing a commotion in front of her office building, a few blocks from the attack.

When she looked out her window, she saw police arresting a man.

“There was a fair amount of what looks like blood on his (clothing),” she said.

Photos she posted on Twitter showed the man in a blue hoodie and jeans with a red streak on the thigh.
